D365 Layout
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Layout is a space planning, fit testing and visualization application developed for HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality VR Headsets.
I joined the Mixed Reality at Work team at Microsoft about a year before they went public with the Layout app in May 2018. Many cool features of the app were already prototyped, so my work as a UX Designer included contextual inquiry, going on site with customers, product envisioning, VR feature design, partner demos and some initial designs around the included PC app that allows users to import their own 3D models.
Some stuff is
top secret…
Why a VR and HoloLens app?
As we talked to more customers through contextual injury we started to hear a theme that we hadn’t considered in our initial use-cases. We built the HoloLens app so that user could visualize, perhaps fit test their machines, equipment or furniture in their own space —that’s the magic of AR, overlaying virtual elements onto the real world. However, we came to find some customers don’t have access to the space. This could be that the space planner is on the other side of the world, the environment is hazard to be in for too long, or it simply just doesn’t exist yet.
This was the perfect use-case for VR —you could still check the designs or fit test the space, all remotely or in the connivence of your own office. We did a quick prototype converting the HoloLens app to VR, once we validated the idea with customers we started building a true Mixed Reality app, one that worked in AR and VR.
I was able to talk about the experience of how we converted the HoloLens app to a VR app, and how I thought about that adaptive design experience, specially from my perspective of coming from the world of 2D, at the annual XRDC 2018 conference.
My key contributions to the Layout app included:
Design Lead of feature crew
VR features
Onboarding Tutorial
Initial PC Import Tool designs/research
Contextual Inquiries
Partner demos
(+ some features that didn’t ship)

I am currently working on an in-process and exploratory project around how we can improve businesses with Mixed Reality, but it is protected by NDA.
